Everyone hopes for beautiful weather on their wedding day. But sometimes Mother Nature has different plans. So what to do when it rains on a wedding day and where to take best photos?
After photographing close to 200 weddings I have experienced many different weather conditions, from outdoor hot Sumer weddings to freezing Winter celebrations and of course rainy day weddings. Not many things can surprise me. I always find the best solution for my clients and their wedding photos. Here are a few tips about what to do when it rains on a wedding day.
Starting with a good back up plan in case of rain is always a good idea. Very often I will set up a meeting to preview venue ahead of the time, especially if I haven’t photographed there before. It’s a great opportunity to visually get familiar with surroundings and choose best option for different types of photos no matter what the weather conditions may be.
It was impossible to take any outdoor pictures during Kailyn and Steven’s wedding day due to exessive rainfall. And after previously previewing Sleepy Hollow Country Club I knew exactly which part of the building would work best for their photos. We took advantage of the beautiful architecture with a mix of natural and artificial lighting to create beautiful memories.
Most of the wedding venues or getting ready locations will offer a great indoor option for photos. But I always like to challenge myself and look for more creative options with an outdoor rain coverage or interesting indoor areas.
Gabrielle and Simon had their first look by the entrance to the The High line, which offered ample coverage from the rain.
Daniella and Jonathan didn’t mind taking it to the dance floor to capture a few intimate moments while it was raining outside.
Erin and Shoji were married at Audrey’s Farm house and we took their photos at Erin’s getting ready cottage.
Don’t be afraid to use umbrella and go outside to take photos. Black and sleek umbrellas are always my favorite to use. Clear umbrellas are great option too. And make sure to have an extra pair of shoes to switch when going outside.
Anne Marie was changing her shoes into rain boots so we could walk to the field to take a photo below.
And consider moving your photos later during a day if the weather forecast shows a promise of better conditions. Evening photos are beautiful and very romantic.
That’s a huge one! Don’t be disappointed when it rains on your wedding day. Trust your photographer and let him/her capture your beautiful moments. Yes. You may get a little wet when going outside and your dress may get a little dirty but captured memories will be priceless.
